The Wal-Mart You Don't Know

Here's an absolutely fantastic article about the economic and social side-effects of the virus known as Wal-Mart. Prepare to be disgusted.

"Wal-Mart has also lulled shoppers into ignoring the difference between the price of something and the cost. Its unending focus on price underscores something that Americans are only starting to realize about globalization: Ever-cheaper prices have consequences. Says Steve Dobbins, president of thread maker Carolina Mills: 'We want clean air, clear water, good living conditions, the best health care in the world--yet we aren't willing to pay for anything manufactured under those restrictions.'"

We got Wal-Mart into Montana about 12 years ago. Within 6 years half the grocery stores in my city had closed. The remaining chains are fighting for their lives.

Ironically, many of those people who had worked at the other groceries now work at Wal-Mart, for near minimum wage and almost no benefits. Wal-Mart really is killing our country.

Ever see the South Park episode called Goobacks? Cheap labor from the future takes everybody's jobs (so they can invest in bank accounts for their future families). I know it's about immigrant labor, but it reminded me of Wal-Mart...

First of all... long article. :)

The scariest part about all of this is that it' not just 'our country' that Wal-Mart is screwing up. Wal-Mart has opened stores in Japan UNDER A DIFFERENT NAME and have begun to suck the life out of other countries as well as 'ours'. I know changing the name is a marketing trick, but damn, that's dastardly! Most if not all of the shoppers have a clue that Wal-Mart is Wal-Mart.
